ABOUT THE PRESENTATION
Did you know that 2 in 5 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer? At some point, all massage therapists will work with a client who has cancer or has undergone cancer treatment. Few medical conditions have treatments that are as complex and affect every system of the body as cancer treatment. Cancer survivorship rates are increasing. For this reason, it is imperative that massage therapists have, at minimum, a baseline understanding of how to safely work with people who have undergone cancer treatment. Safe practices in oncology massage is a one day, evidence-informed course to:
- Introduce integrative cancer care
- Review the therapeutic relationship when working with people with cancer
- Explain cancer metastasis and massage safety
- Explore the lymphatic system and cancer
- Present and practice the foundations of oncology massage
- Develop critical thinking in order to provide safe treatment for clients who have undergone biomedical cancer treatments (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, hormone therapy)
- Briefly introduce massage and medications/cancer detection/use of heat and cold
- A short overview of palliative and hospice care.
- Receive a handout with resources on relevant research, oncology massage training and a synopsis of the key points of the presentation. Participants will learn the foundational knowledge and basic hands-on approaches to safely treat a client who has cancer or has undergone cancer treatment.
